Profile: "Big" Ben Showing His Stuff
By: Robert Pimpsner / Wednesday 22, 2006
After his homerun on June 23, 2004, baby-bombers.com gave
Ben Jones the nickname “Big Ben.” That homerun was the sole run in
the game for the Staten Island Yankees in the 3 – 1 loss.
“Big” Ben Jones went on to belt six homeruns and six
doubles throughout the 2004 season, batting .280 with only 28 RBIs.
In 2005, Jones got the promotion to Class A South Atlantic League’s
Charleston River Dogs.
With Charleston, Jones batted .288, with 14 home runs, 33
doubles and 77 RBIs. His home runs numbers were more then double
then 2004 and his doubles were more then four times that of with Staten
Island.
With his impressive performance with the Charleston
River Dogs, Jones earned a promotion to the Class A Florida State League
Tampa Bay Yankees for 2006. In just thirteen games, Jones
struggled, batting only .125 with 40 at bats, 1 homerun and 1 double.
The Yankees sent Jones back to Charleston, hoping he regain his power
numbers and average.
“Big” Ben Jones did just that, in 110 games with
Charleston in 2006, he hit .298 with 18 doubles, 4 triples, and 21 home
runs, setting a new River Dogs record. In 383 at bats, Jones drove
in 88 base runners, and had an on base percentage of .409.
Next season it is possible that “Big” Ben would start out
again with the Tampa Bay Yankees. If the 25 year old infielder’s
numbers are as good as they were with his time in Charleston then there
is a small chance of a jump to Trenton. |
