June 24, 2007 - It was a warm and sunny after
noon at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark as the Staten Island
Yankees faced off against Cal Ripken’s Aberdeen Ironbirds in the
final game of a three game set. Dellin Betances got the start
for the baby bombers, his second of the season.
Aberdeen got on the board
early with a run in the second inning, but the bombers’ bats
came alive in the third and stayed out all night. The Yankees
were able to capitalize on several Ironbirds mistakes including
two consecutive errors by the ‘Birds’ short stop. After two
ground outs to begin the third inning Luis Nunez and Damon
Sublett knocked the ball to short, where the short stop booted
the ball allowing both runners to be safe. David Williams drew
a walk to load the bases and a Justin Snyder single plated
Nunez, Sublett.
It would not take long for the
Yankees to plate more runs. In the bottom of the fourth, Chris
Raber walked and with one out he stole second then advanced on a
balk. A Frank LoNigro double brought Raber home. After a
ground out, Luis Nunez reached on an error by the right fielder
which allowed LoNigro to score.
The bombers would add one more
run in the sixth inning after LoNigro got a lead off walk and
came home on a two out triple by Sublett. Staten Island’s
biggest inning was the seventh. Justin Snyder, Andres Perez,
Chris Raver, DJ Hollingsworth, and Frank LoNigro all drew walks
before Austin Krum and Luis Nunez made the first two outs of the
inning. Damon Sublett singled in two runs before David Willams
walked to load the bases again. The inning ended on a Justin
Snyder strike out.
Dellin Betances got the win,
for his first win in his professional career. Tomorrow the
Yankees will travel to Hudson Valley to face the Renegades in
their first series of the year. Zach McAllister is scheduled to
make his second appearance for the bombers.
