July 6, 2007 - It was a beautiful evening at the Richmond County
Bank Ballpark as a packed house of 7,171 fans filled the seats
to watch the rubber game of a three game set between the Staten
Island Yankees and the Brooklyn Cyclones. There was a light sun
shower and a small lightening show in right field as the teams
lined up for the national anthem.
Ryan Zink got the nod for the Baby Bombers, making
his second start of the year. Zink had some trouble in the
first inning, after Micah Schilling and J.R. Voyles grounded out
a Raul Reyes singled. After several throws over to first, Zink
over threw first to allow Reyes to make it all the way to
third. Jason Jacobs was then hit by the pitch and stole second
before Lucas Duda belted a single to bring Reyes home. St.
John’s product Will Vogl then singled to drive in the ‘Clones
second run before Jacob Eigsti grounded out.
The Brooklyn lead did not last very long as the
Staten Island Yankees tied and then took the lead in their half
of the first. Justin Snyder led off the game with a walk and
Luis Nunez singled to right. Damon Sublett then belted a line
drive double to right field scoring Synder. Jose Gil knocked a
sacrifice fly to left to tie the game and bring Sublett to
third. David Williams was then hit by a pitch before Matt
Morris struck out swinging. Yankee first-baseman Taylor Holiday
singled on a ground ball to right to put the Yankees ahead.
The Staten Island Yankees would not be able to the
lead for long as the Cyclones took the lead in the fourth inning
scoring three runs. Zink start the inning but was able to get
any Cyclones out allowing four hits in the inning before Philip
Bartleski came in relief. Bartleski induced a double play then
a ground out to end the inning.
The Cyclones were not done scoring as in the sixth
inning when two hit-by-pitches, a single followed by a double
and another single would give Brooklyn four more insurance runs.
The Yankees had hit in just three innings; the first, fourth,
and ninth. They were unable to mount a rally against Brooklyn
as they fell 9-3 on Fireworks Friday. Ryan Zink took the loss
and Dylan Owen got the win for the Cyclones.
The Yankees will be heading on the road tomorrow to
Batavia, NY to start a three game
road trip before a much needed day off on Tuesday. Nick
Chigges, Adam Olbrychowski and Dellin
Betances are all scheduled to start on the road against the
Muckdogs.
Notes:
Staten Island will welcome the New York Yankees Old Timers as
they take the field for the first time outside of Yankees
Stadium. Baby-bombers.com will be covering the game with a
special photo gallery and feature on the game.
