July 13, 2007 - It was a calm and cool evening
at the ballpark by the bay as the Staten Island Yankees and the
Auburn Doubledays met once again to close out their three game
set. The Yankees were eyeing their first sweep of the season
and fifth consecutive victory, but Auburn had another idea.
The Yankees sent fifth round
draft pick, Adam Olbrychowski to the hill in his first game at
the Richmond County Bank Ballpark. Olbrychowski tried to blow
smoke past the Doubledays but they connected for four hits in
the second, including a homerun over the right field fence for a
3-0 lead over the bombers. He went on to pitch six innings
giving up three runs on five hits with six strikeouts.
The bombers had
an early opportunity to score came in the first inning, when
they had the bases loaded with two outs. Luis Nunez and Damon
Sublett hit back-to-back singles with one out and then advance
90 feet on a double steal. After Isaiah Howes struck out,
Taylor Holiday drew a walk, Matt Morris was the next batter but
he too became a victim to the strike out.
Philip Bartleski came in to
pitch the seventh inning. Bartleski gave up four runs to the
‘Days but only one was earned. The Yankees would not go without
a run as Justin Snyder knocked a lead off homerun to right field
for the first Yankees run of the game.
Jeff Livek took over on the
mound for the eighth inning. After striking out the first
batter a ground ball to the pitcher and a throwing error would
allow the runner to reach second. A wild pitch brought him into
third and a sacrifice fly to left gave the ‘Days an 8-1 lead.
Auburn would reach double digits in the ninth inning taking a
11-1 lead over Staten Island.
Staten Island had the bases loaded in the ninth inning, a passed
ball would give the Yankees a second run with a wild pitch
bringing a third run.
The Yankees could not get
things together at the plate as they struck out twelve times in
the contest and Taylor Holiday receiving the hat trick.
Notes: Staten Island now has
another new pitcher, Yankees third round pick Ryan Pope has been
assigned to the roster and will make his debut with in the next
three days.
