July 1, 2007 - After taking the
series last night from the Aberdeen Ironbirds, the baby bombers
looked to turn a new leaf in their quest for a fifth NY-Penn
League title. The Staten Island Yankees opened the gates
to 4,307 fans as they honored the men and women of the US Armed
Forces during the contest against the Hudson Valley Renegades.
Angel Reyes got the
start for the bombers, Reyes lasted only 1.1 innings in the
contest giving up three runs to the visiting 'Gades.
Philip Bartleski took over in the second inning and pitched 2.2
shutout innings, he then turned it over to Ryan Zink. Zink
went on to pitch five innings, giving up two runs earning the
win.
The baby bombers got
on the board in the fifth inning. DJ Hollingsworth lead
off getting hit by the pitch, he then scored after James LaSala
singled and the Renegades right field committed an error.
LaSala advanced to second on a balk, then after two consecutive
outs Damon Sublett knocked a two run homerun over the right
field wall for his second on the year. The Yankees would
add more to the run column in the sixth inning, with one out the
baby bombers loaded the bases for Austin Krum, who came in the
game as a pinch hitter for James LaSala. Krum then earned
a walk which forced in the tying run. A ground ball single
to center by Taylor Holiday plated two more runs to give the
Yankees the lead and move Krum to third. Luis Nunez hit a
sacrifice fly to right field to plate Krum and give the bombers
7-4 lead.
The Yankees would not
score in the rest of the game, but was able to hold on to lead
for the victory. Tomorrow night the 'Gades and Yanks face
off in game two at Dutchess Stadium. Gabe Medina and
Adam
Olbrychowski are scheduled to make appearances
on the mound.
