August 3,
2007 – There was a
packed house at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark as the Staten
Island Yankees took on the Lowell Spinners in the second game of
a three game set. The Yankees and Spinners came into the
contest tied for the lead in the NY-Penn League wild card chase,
both looking for a win to move into a potential playoff spot.
Adam Olbrychowski started the game for the Baby
Bombers going five innings and allowing two runs on five hits
while striking out six batters. The two runs came in the third,
when he allowed three singles and walk while also committing an
error.
Staten Island plated their first run in the
bottom of the fourth inning. After Damon Sublett struck out
Braedyn Pruitt was hit by the pitch and then moved over to
second on a wild pitch with Jose Gil at the plate. Gil then
struck out which brought David Williams to the plate. A passed
ball by Ty Weeden moved Pruitt over to third and then David
Williams knocked a line drive to left for an RBI single.
Lowell would come back to plate three more
players in the sixth inning, putting them ahead 5-1. Damon
Sublett powered his way for the Yankees second run in the eighth
inning on a solo shot over the right field fence.
Sublett’s homer was not enough; as the Spinners
went on to plate two more in the ninth inning for a 7-2 lead.
The bombers tried to rally in the ninth with one out after David
Williams hit a ball that was just shy of a homerun for 2 bases.
Ryan Wehrle was next at the plate but hit a line drive to the
right fielder that was then thrown to second to get Williams
out.
These two teams will meet again tomorrow night
on Robinson Cano Night. Ryan Pope will be on the mound for the
bomber and Cano will make an appearance as the team retires his
number 17.
