August 18, 2007 – The Bombers brought out the bats as they took on the Brooklyn Cyclones for the first time since July 6.  Staten Island hitters combined to smack out 12 runs on 11 hits against their cross-town rivals.  This game marked the third consecutive game that the Yankees plated at least 9 runs, all on the road.

Staten Island got on the board early when they plated a run in the top of the first inning.  Justin Snyder was hit by the second pitch of the game to be the first base runner.  After Taylor Holiday struck out, back-to-back singles by Damon Sublett and Braedyn Pruitt brought home Snyder for the first run of the ballgame.

The Bombers would pad their lead in the fourth when they touched home 4 times for a 5-0 lead.  Justin Snyder led off with a walk and then moved to second on a groundball single to center by Taylor Holiday.  Both runners would move 90 feet when pitcher Nicholas Carr threw a wild pitch with Damon Sublett at the plate.  Sublett then smacked a line drive to left field that fell in for an RBI single, plating Snyder and moving Holiday to third.  Braedyn Pruitt then knocked a sacrifice fly to right field to play Holiday.  Matt Morris then belted a ground-ruled double to put 2 men in scoring position and 1 out.  After a Austin Krum ground out made it 2 outs, Jose Gil then lined a single to left for 2 RBIs and score Staten Island’s fifth run.

Zach McAllister got the start for the Yankees, his twelfth start of the season.  McAllister allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in 4.2 innings of work while striking out 5 batters.  Ryan Zink came in to finish out the fifth inning and pitch the full sixth, allowing a single run to cut the Yankees lead to 2.

The Bombers were held off the board for 4 innings before they exploded for 7 runs in the eighth.  Matt Morris led the inning off with a walk and moved to second when Austin Krum laid down a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher.  But a fielding error by the pitcher allowed Krum to reach first, putting 2 men on with no outs.  Jose Gil then laid down a sacrifice bunt to third to allow both runners to advance 90 feet.  DJ Hollingsworth was then walked intentionally to load the bases.  Back-to-back walks to David Williams and Justin Snyder forced in 2 more runs to give the Yankees a 7-3 lead.  After a pitching change Taylor Holiday then belted a fly ball single to left field to plate Hollingsworth and Williams, giving the Yankees a 9-3 lead.  Damon Sublett doubled (15) on a line drive to right field to plate 2 more runs and give the Yankees 11 runs.  The Bombers twelfth run came in 2 outs when Matt Morris knocked a single to third, plating Damon Sublett.

Jacinto Gonell, Craig Heyer, and “The Sandman” Jonathan Ortiz all made appearances in the game pitching 1 inning a piece.  The Staten Island Yankees and Brooklyn Cyclones will meet up again tomorrow at 2:00 for the second game of this 4 game set.  Adam Olbrychowski will get the nod for the Yankees, facing the Cyclones for the first time in his professional career.
